Abstract

919,224. Making bearings; jointing. KAHR BEARING CORPORATION. Sept. 21, 1960, No. 20587/62. Divided out of 919,223. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). The method of forming a bearing comprises press-fitting into an inner bearing member 6, 6<SP>1</SP> having an axial bore 9, 9<SP>1</SP> an expansion pin 8, 8<SP>1</SP> to temporarily expand said inner member, placing said expanded inner member within a tubular outer race member 5, 5<SP>1</SP> applying forming pressure to said outer race member, to permanently deform it about said inner member and to produce an assembly wherein said inner member is tightly held by said formed outer race member and then withdrawing said expansion pin from said inner bearing member. The inner surface of the outer race member is rough machined or sand blasted to facilitate the bonding thereto of a low friction woven fabric material 7, and the inner bearing member is buffed or polished or chrome-plated and polished. The outer race member 5 is formed about the inner member 6 by forcing it through an extrusion die 10, Fig. 1. Dies 10<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, are used for forming the outer race member of the spherical type bearing. In making the spherical type bearing without the low friction lining after removing the expansion pin the assembly is subjected to a second press-forming operation in the dies 10<SP>1</SP> to bring the end portions 12 of the outer race member 5<SP>1</SP> into closer relationship with the inner member 6<SP>1</SP>. The outer race is machined prior to the second press-forming operation to reduce its thickness and eliminate the curvature of its outer surface caused by the forming dies.
