Abstract
1,008,884. Tube expanding, stamping. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. May 28, 1964 [June 19, 1963], No. 22121/64. Headings B3J and B3Q. [Also in Division F2] A method of expanding a tube 9 inserted in the bore of a plate 10 to the plate, comprises inserting a first ring of elastic material 11 between the tube and plate temporarily positioning an expander ring of elastic material 16 within the tube opposite to the plate and applying thereto an axial compressive stress so as to produce a permanent radial deformation of the tube against the plate and the imprisoning of the first elastic ring between the tube and plate. The expander ring comprises, for example, three rubber rings 16 separated from each other by steel disc 17 mounted on a headed plunger 7<SP>1</SP> which is retracted by hydraulic means relative to a bush 8 to compress the rings and expand the tube, Fig. 12, to form an annular bulge and a flared mouth and trap the ring 11 therebetween. A ceramic tube 12 may be attached to a plate by using a shouldered adaptor 14 which is similarly expanded into contact with the plate, Fig. 14. In another example a metal ring 31 is permanently expanded to retain a thin walled tube 23 in the plate 24, Fig. 15. The plunger and bush assembly may be arranged in and be actuated by a hydro-pneumatic circuit assembly, Fig. 10 (not shown). The bush member may be arranged to move relatively to the plunger means, Fig. 16 (not shown).
