Abstract
804,392. Making bearings and pivots. RICEFIELD, L. May 23, 1956, No. 15938/56. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXV] A method of forming and assembling a selfaligning bearing comprises providing a resilient metal ring 17, Fig. 4, having an inner annular spherical surface 17a, weakening the ring at one point 17c in its periphery, applying pressure to the ring to cause it to split transversely at said weak point, Fig. 3, expanding the ring and inserting a spherical bearing-member 16 into the ring and then allowing the ring to contract into engagement with the spherical member, Fig. 2. The ring 17 is preferably made of spring steel and is formed with a longitudinal groove 17c in its outer surface. The ring is then split by driving a sharp tool 20, Fig. 3, into the groove. The assembled parts 16, 17 are then inserted into a bore in a bracket-member 18a, Fig. 2, which has a radial extension 18b, Fig. 1, for receiving a tie-rod or the like, especially when the bearing is for use in aircraft frame construction. A lubrication hole 17e, Fig. 4, and a corresponding hole 18d are formed in the ring 17 and bracket 18a, respectively, for lubrication purposes. Lubricant retaining rings 22 of felt or synthetic rubber are provided at the ends of the ring 17 and engage the spherical surface of the member 16. These retaining- rings are secured within outer metal rings 23 fitted within the bore of the bracket 18a and secured therein by peening at 24. Other methods are described of splitting the ring 17 by the application of pressure, Figs. 7 to 14 (not shown).
