Abstract

734,439. Self-aligning bearings. POTTER, L. R. Feb. 13,1953, No. 4092/53. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXII] A self-aligning bearing, Fig. 3, comprises an inner member 21 of hard metal such as steel, and a race 20 of soft metal such as brass, which race is originally cylindrical in shape but is pressed around the member 21 in dies so that compressive forces act on its inner peripheral surface and tensile forces act on its outer surface. When the bearing is taken from the die the member 21 is bound to the race as a unit and must be freed by rolling &c. which reduces the forces acting on the race to permit the member to move freely within the race. The race blank, Fig. 6, may be provided with an oil way 10 and a radial hole 11, or the member 21 may have an annular flat to provide an oil channel. In a modification the race may be provided with an end flange, and the bearing may be machined to give the race an outer cylindrical surface.
