Abstract

1373834 Bearings TIMKEN CO 23 Jan 1973 [7 Feb 1972] 5675/72 Heading F2A A cup for a tapered roller bearing comprises a member 1 having a conical bore and a raceway constituted by a shell 2 of substantially constant wall thickness, the shell being retained in the bore under a continuous state of compressive hoop stress. The shell is retained by a flange 4 which is deformed into contact with the end of the shell after assembly. The end adjacent the flange 4 may be provided with anintegral or separate roller-retaining flange, or alternatively a mounting-ring for a seal. The shell is formed by pressing or cold-forming, may be heat-treated before assembly, and may be ground internally after assembly. The member 1 is of metal or plastics.
