Abstract
770,228. Making bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 18, 1955 [Nov. 19, 1954], No. 33630/54. Class 83 (2). In the manufacture of bearings from metal strip by cutting the strip into blanks and bending and coin-pressing each blank to semicylindrical form, an oil hole 4, Fig. 4, is punched in the strip or in the blank 3, cut therefrom, before bending, leaving the punched-out slug 5 partly ejected, the slug being pressed back into the hole before or during the bending and coin-pressing to limit or prevent distortion of the hole and being subsequently ejected. The strip preferably consists of a steel backing 1 and a layer of bearing metal 2. One or more oil holes 4 may be punched simultaneously with the cutting of the strip into blanks, each of which is then bent in a die to semi-cylindrical form, Fig. 5 (not shown), during which the slug 5 is pressed back into the hole. The bent blank is then coin-pressed, Fig. 6 (not shown). The operations of cutting, bending and coinpressing may be performed successively as a continuous operation on a progressive press tool. An inner circumferential oil groove 7, Fig. 8 (not shown), is then machined, partially removing the slug 5. The blank is then pressed in a die, Fig. 9, to form a locating tab 8 and simultaneously a punch 9 ejects the remainder of the slug 5. The bearing is then finished by applying relief near the joint faces, broaching the joint faces, de-burning and machining the bore. A layer of soft metal may then be applied to the bore by plating.
