Abstract
557,125. Heading cartridge cases &c. DAVENPORT, S., and PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd. Sept. 4, 1942, No. 12508. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In the production of headed cartridge cases and like articles from cupped blanks, the blank is subjected at an early stage in the drawing operations to a single indenting operation that forms an axially projecting bulge round the border of the under surface of the head and also tapers the end of the case adjacent the head. After two draws from a circular disc the cupped blank is indented by a punch 11, Fig. 2, in a ring die 12 enclosing a counter die 13 to form an axial bulge 18 and a taper 15. At the same time a central indentation is formed to receive the pressure cap &c. The blank then undergoes a number of drawing and annealing operations to reduce the walls of the cartridge to finished form after which a single heading operation transfers the metal of the bulge 18 to form the flange 20, Fig. 3, and produces an inturned indent 30 so that burring is eliminated in the subsequent drilling and tapping.
