Abstract
554,449. Making projectiles. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., and KELLEY, G. L. Jan. 2, 1942, No. 70. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Pipe-end closing.-In making a shell or bomb case or other hollow or cupped article, of circular or other symmetrical cross section, a flat blank of tapering cross section is formed into a cylindrical blank, the walls of which taper from one end to the other and the end having the thicker wall is pressed, hot or cold, into a die having the contour required. The blank may be made by rolling or by severing a flat rolled blank having thin or thick ends, Figs. 5 or 6. This blank is rolled up to form the required cylinder and the joint welded. In a modification, the pressing may be done in stages, the work being annealed, if necessary, between the stages. Specification 516,895 is referred to.
