Abstract
709,267. Extruding. HARD ALLOYS, Ltd. Oct. 1 1951 [Oct. 5, 1950], No. 24350/50. Class 83 (4) An impact extrusion die incorporating sizing, radiused and base portions is formed by two main components one of said components forming said sizing portion and the whole or a part of the radiused portion and being made from cemented carbides or other hard metal or from cobalt-chrome alloy, and the other component forming the base portion, and, where the whole of the radiused portion is not included in the first component, the remainder of the radiused portion and being made from steel or from a material similar to that used for the firstmentioned component. A ring-like portion 1 and a base plug 8 are assembled to form a die having a cylindrical sizing surface 3, a base portion 4 and a radiused portion 5. The outer part of the bore of the ring 1 may be chamfered to form a belled lead-in 6. The radiused portion 5 may be formed by a combination of rad used and chamfered surfaces and part of the radiused portion may be formed by the marginal surface 5' of the base plug 2. The ring 1 and the base plug 2 are held in position by a two-part die box comprising an upper steel part 7 and a lower steel part 8 which makes a screw-thread engagement with the part 7. The lower part 8 acts as a pressure pad for the base plug 2 which has a flange for abutment against the ring 1. A spacer ring 9 may be interposed between said flange and the ring 1. The upper peripheral portion of the ring 1 is stepped for engagement by an overhanging lip portion 10 of the part 7 of the die box. The die ring and base plug are made from cemented carbides or from a metal alloy known under the Registered Trade Mark " Stellite ". In operation, a disc-like pellet of zinc or aluminium or of zinc, aluminium, or copper alloys is placed in the die and a punch is. driven into the die to cause the metal of the pellet to be extruded backwards over the punch to form a container for pharmaceutical preparations or film cassettes or valve screens or the like.
