Abstract
843,964. Making containers; extruding; welding by pressure. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Sept. 18, 1958 [Oct. 18, 1957], No. 32620/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). An aluminium container, Fig. 2, is made by backwardly extruding a ring-shaped aluminium blank 5, Fig. 1, whilst seated on an aluminium disc 4 whereby the ring forms the container wall 6 and the disc an integral bottom 4. The disc is preferably harder than the ring to facilitate preferential flow of the latter; they may be cold-pressure-welded together initially or may be cold-pressure-welded together during the extrusion. The ring 5 may be out from an extruded aluminium tube and the disc blanked out of aluminium plate; both are fed immediately to the extrusion die 1, Fig. 1, in synchronism with the operation thereof, through tunnels containing an inert gas which precludes oxidation of the aluminium and hence facilitates the cold welding. Within die 1 the ring 5 is backwardly impact-extruded by an annular punch 2 containing a spring-loaded hold-down plunger 3 acting on the disc 4, and simultaneously a cold-pressure-welded joint 7 is produced.
