Abstract

1,254,641. Extruding. ST. JOSEPH LEAD CO. 13 Jan., 1969 [30 Jan., 1968], No. 1845/69. Heading B3P. [Also in Division C5] In metal extrusion through a substantially flat faced die a lubricant of a mixture of organic material and granular material of solids which are softer than the billet at the extrusion temperature is used. The die 40 is mounted conventionally in the press and has a pair of orifices 42, 44 of L, I, T or U shape. The die face may be flat or have a half-angle of at least 75 degrees with the die axis. The half angle may be greater than 90 degrees. The periphery of the die has a tapered surface 46 to direct metal towards the orifices during extrusion. The surface may be on a separate ring (50), Fig. 4 (not shown), seated on the die. The taper is from 15 to 75 degrees and preferably 30 to 60 degrees. The organic material of the lubricant has an average molecular weight of 300, for example, polymers such as aliphatic or aromatic resins and plastics, paraffins, naphthenes, greases, polyolefins, and polyacrylates. Polybutene is preferred for extrusion at 500‹ to 1500‹ F. The solid is a metal salt, metal oxide, e.g. lead oxide, mica or talc. The grains preferably have a size of 1 to 7 microns although they may be “ inch. The granular content is 5 to 60% by weight. An example using lead oxide and polybutene to extrude zinc alloys is given.
