Abstract
663,309. Cupping; uniting by fusion. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 27, 1949 [May 1, 1948], No. 11209/49. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Groups XXXVI and XL (a)] A molybdenum disc 4 is formed with an annular corrugation 6 by placing it between two steel plates 13, 14. The upper plate 13 carries a plunger 16 bearing against a hard steel ball 17. The inner edge 20 of opening 15 is flared out so that an annular portion of the disc may move upward when the ball 17 is pressed down by plunger 16 against the centre of the disc. A thin sheet of a softer metal such as brass or nickel may be placed between the lower plate 14 and the disc 4. This is forced away from the centre of the disc under pressure, thus causing the depth of the corrugation to be increased. The molybdenum disc may be hermetically joined to a tungsten rod by brazing, using platinum or palladium as the brazing material. Specification 658,218, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
