1374449 Shaping glass sheets LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 17 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 53441/71 Heading C1M A cathode-ray tube front plate is produced by resting a plane parallel plate 3 of glass on a die 2 so as to overhang the edge of the die, then heating by burners 5 only the overhanging glass 4 and applying a former 1 to produce a rim for attachment to the funnel shaped portion of the cathode-ray tube. The die 2 is raised into the former 1 so that contact between the inner surface 7 of the former 1 and the part of the plate 3 which is to form the front of the tube is avoided. The die 2 may possess a raised central portion 9 so that complete contact with the glass is avoided. The glass may be preheated, in its entirety, to a temperature below its softening point prior to the forming operation. A measuring grid may be provided on the surface of the glass which contacts the die. In place of the annular burner 5 shown, only two or three burners may be provided and both die 2 and former 1 are rotated. For rectangular front plates, the distance of the burners for the axis of rotation may be varied as by cam plates. The burners may act on the underside of the edge 4 instead of from above. The die and former may be formed of a refractory material and carbon respectively. The front plate with grid and fluorescent screen is then sealed by its rim to the funnel section.
