Abstract

770,097. Shaping glass articles. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 1, 1955 [June 4, 1954], No. 15719/55. Class 56 [Also in Group XL(a)] In the manufacture of glass members having an end face and a side wall portion substantially perpendicular thereto, particularly the window of a cathode ray tube, the edge of the perpendicular portion being subsequently sealed to the conical portion of the tube, a flat glass plate 1 having a substantially rectangular surface with rounded corners is placed on a matrix 5. The plate is heated and sags as shown to begin the formation of the side wall portion 4. Completion of the side wall is effected by the applicationof pressure as by rollers 7. Pressure rollers are also provided adjacent the rounded corners. The rollers also act to impart a taper to the edge of the side wall to facilitate the subsequent sealing operation.
