Abstract

<PICT:0945907/C3/1> In coating metal sheet or strip with metal powder electrophoretically from a suspension of the finely divided coating metal and then heating the deposit under pressure to render the coating adherent, e.g. as described in Specification 884,797, the thickness of the coating is in inverse proportion to the thickness gauge of the substrate metal, whereby a uniform thickness is obtained on compaction in the subsequent heating and rolling stage. The variation in the thickness of the deposit may be effected by forming a series of strip anodes 16 hinged together into a curved surface as presented to the substrate strip 11. The position of the anode strips is determined by control rods 18. In other forms, (a) the anode strips are insulated individually, and are connected to separate power sources which can be varied, e.g. by an automatic control operated by photo-cells scanning the thickness of the deposit, (b) a screen in the form of strips is interposed between the anode and the strip, the position of which strips may be adjusted.
