Abstract

1367582 Forging dies UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 23 Feb 1972 [10 May 1971] 8455/72 Heading B3H A forging die has its surface formed with a series of small grooves 2 which act to retain a lubricant as the metal being forged flows over the die surface. The grooves may be annular and coaxially with the axis of the forging press in which the die is used or spiral about the axis. The side of the groove nearest the axis is normal to the die surface. Suitable lubricants are graphite or boron nitride mixed with water or alcohol. The billet is a nickel-based superalloy heated by induction heaters (136A), (136B), Fig. 1 (not shown), and the forging may be in a vacuum or inert atmosphere.
