[Class 82 (i)] [Also in Groups V and XXII] In a process for making bodies from powdered metals, for example, one or more of the metals copper, silver, gold, platinum-group metals, iron, cobalt, nickel, zinc, cadmium, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, aluminium, chromium, magnesium, and beryllium, with or without additional constituents such as carbon, silicon, boron, oxides, carbides, sulphides, silicides, pumicestone, glass, porcelain, artificial resins, hydrocarbons, alcohols, acids, or alkalies, the material is first pressed at normal or raised temperature at such a relatively low pressure that the escape of gas bubbles from the interior is not prevented during later further consolidation, whereafter the porous body is further consolidated at relatively higher pressure. The starting material is preferably free from dust and may contain deoxidizing or gas-absorbing constituents such as zinc, aluminium, or beryllium. The initial pressing may be carried out in stages, and the surface of the pressed body may be loosened between the stages, for example, by the use of a rotatable die with an uneven surface. The bodies may be built up in stages using successive thin layers of material which may be of the same or of different compositions. The pressing dies may be porous to assist the liberation of gas, and the pressing may be effected in a vacuum. The products may be sheets, wires, or other forms, and these may be worked by forging, rolling, pressing, or drawing, or may be subjected to further heat treatment, for example, in a reducing atmosphere or in a salt bath.
