Abstract

The operative portion of abrasive, cutting, &c. tools is made by pressing into a coherent mass a mixture of diamond particles and in powder form one or more of the metals copper, nickel, cobalt or aluminium or alloys having a basis of these metals or the ingredients of such alloys. Alloys referred to are inter alia silicon bronzes, age hardening copper base alloys, brasses and bronzes containing 70-80 per cent zinc, and bronzes containing 10-20 per cent tin. The mix may contain up to 60 per cent diamond particles according to the fineness thereof, and the particles may be graded. The production of the coherent mass may be assisted by the application of heat, but the heat should not be sufficient to fuse the metal bond; by employing non-oxidizing conditions; and by adding non-metallic materials, e.g. a sulphide, which will promote coalescence of the metal particles under pressure and the adherence thereof to the diamond particles. The non-operative portion of the tool may be formed from finely divided metal from which diamond is omitted.
