Abstract
A metallic composition particularly suitable for wire-drawing dies consists of a carbide of a metal such as tungsten, up to 25 per cent of an iron-group metal such as cobalt, and a few per cent of a grain growth inhibitor such as thoria. A reduced mixture of tungstic oxide and thorium nitrate, or of tungsten and thorium nitrate, or of tungstie oxide and thoria may be carbonized as described in Specification 213,524, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], whereby a mixture of tungsten carbide and thoria is formed. This is milled with cobalt and the product is pressed and sintered.
