Abstract

516,734. Alloys. WILLEY, F. H. July 5, 1938, No. 19881. Convention date, July 21, 1937. [Class 82 (i)] A hard alloy for gauges, lathe centres and other articles is made by heating under pressure in a series of stages of increasing pressure and temperature a powdered mixture of 76-87 per cent. of tungsten carbide having a 6 per cent. carbon content, 9-20 per cent. of cobalt, nickel, or iron, and up to 4 per cent. of molybdenum and chromium, with or without a small amount of boron, silicon, tantalum, antimony, manganese, titanium, vanadium, or zirconium, for example up to 10 per cent. of titanium. The temperature may be 900-1,750‹C. and the final pressure 700-1,400 kg. per sq. in. The product may be ground and polished to give a reflecting surface. Specification 462,809, [Group XI], is referred to.
