Abstract

513,564. Case-hardening. SCHICHAU GES., F. Dec. 29, 1937, No. 35983. Void. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1936. [Class 72] Material or articles which are required to have wear-resistant properties, especially parts of coal-dust engines, and tools, matrices, and moulds, is or are produced by case-hardening by glowing or cementation a material containing 2-80 per cent. of one or more carbideformers such as chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, manganese, zirconium, titanium, tantalum, uranium, boron, or cerium, the remainder of the material being constituted by one or more non-carbide-formers such as iron, nickel, cobalt, silicon, or copper, with or without carbon (in a proportion, e.g., of 0.1-0.2 per cent.). A part made of steel containing 13 per cent. of chromium and 0.14 per cent. of carbon was heated in Durferrit " for 10 hours at 1,050‹C. The hardness of materials treated according to the invention may be influenced by heat-treatment ; the materials may be carburized in part or throughout and may be subjected to cementation after having been sprayed, welded, pressed or rolled on other surfaces being previously or subsequently shaped as desired.
