Use of a hard metal for gas turbine blades The subject of patent 973 902, which was not previously published, is a hard metal of high resistance to oxidation at high temperatures. These properties are achieved by the double carbide titanium-chromium or mixed crystals of titanium and chromium carbide in a hard metal of 4., 5 to rq.% Chromium carbide, over 2o to 6o 0 / a auxiliary metal from one or more of the metals nickel, cobalt or iron , The remainder being titanium carbide. In a particularly effective hard metal of this type, 2o% of its carbide content consists of chromium carbide, while qo to 50% of the auxiliary metal is nickel.
It has now been shown that such a hard metal is outstanding
suitable as a material for the blades of gas turbines. As is known, gas turbine blades are
exposed to the greatest stresses at high temperatures, so that their heat resistance
very special requirements are placed. So far, such turbine blades have been used
nickel and chrome alloyed steels or sintered materials based on titanium carbide
used with cobalt as an aid, but not always satisfactory.
In contrast, it was found that the hard metal according to patent 973 902 has a surprising creep strength, which is characterized by the fact that its breaking strength is about 22 kg / mm2 when subjected to 30 hours of exposure at a temperature of 75 ° C. Furthermore, the hard metal according to patent 973 902 as a material for turbine blades has the extraordinary advantage over the known steels alloyed with chromium and nickel, as the latter have to undergo a special heat treatment for this purpose. If the operating temperature of the gas turbine then comes in the tempering temperature range, the properties of the known steels deteriorate suddenly. In contrast, the hard metal according to patent 973 902 does not require any heat treatment, which is why its properties are completely independent of the operating temperature of the turbines. Furthermore, the density of the hard metal proposed according to the invention as material for the blades of gas turbines is lower than that of the known chromium-nickel alloys, so that the centrifugal forces do not have the same effect on the latter. Finally, the hard metal has a very much greater wear and abrasion resistance than the alloys that have hitherto been used for the manufacture of turbine blades, which is important because the blades are often subject to such stress.
According to this invention as a material for the blades of gas turbines
The hard metal to be used should be 5 to 12% chromium carbide, over 2o and up to 60 ° / a
Auxiliary metal from one or more of the metals nickel, cobalt or iron, remainder
Titanium carbide, the carbides being present as double carbide or mixed crystals.
Nickel is preferably used as the auxiliary metal. The nickel content should be
expediently be 40 to 50%. It plays a role in that the turbine blades,
after being pressed from the cemented carbide mixture, pre-sintered, machined and fully sintered
had to be reworked in a certain way, and it turned out that
that a hard metal containing nickel as an auxiliary metal, for example, lighter
is to be ground as hard metal, the auxiliary metal of which consists of cobalt.
