Abstract
Heat-resistant alloys, particularly those comprising nickel and chromium, with or without tungsten and iron, are made by sintering a compressed mixture of the finely divided powders of the constituent metals and a small proportion, e.g., a few tenths per cent. of a refractory oxide, particularly thoria. An example is made by compressing a mixture of powders containing 68 per cent. of iron, 8 per cent. of nickel, 4 per cent. of tungsten and 20 per cent. of chromium, together with 0.3 per cent. of thoria, preferably as a solution of thorium nitrate, and heating for 30 hours at 1350 DEG C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, or for a shorter time in stages with intermediate working. The chromium is preferably introduced as an iron-chromium alloy.
