Abstract
659,665. Powder metallurgy. CLARK, D. M. (Isthmian Metals, Inc.). July 1, 1949, No. 17455. [Class 83 (iv)] In a method of making a soft iron body free from oxides, iron powder containing absorbed oxygen is mixed with carbon powder, pressed at not more than 40 tons per square inch and then sintered and cooled in a non- oxidizing atmosphere, the amount of added carbon being such as to leave not more than 0.4 per cent in the final body. The sintering takes place at between 1800‹ to 2050‹ F. after which the body may be repressed at between 60-90 tons per square inch. Manganese may be present in an amount not exceeding 0.9 per cent. As an example, electrolytic iron powder containing 0.6-0.8 per cent oxygen was mixed with 0.5-0.9 per cent manganese powder, 0.3 per cent powdered graphite and 1 per cent stearic acid or other lubricant. The mixture was pressed at 15-40 tons per square inch and sintered in hydrogen at 2000 ‹ F. for about three hours, the remaining carbon not exceeding 0.1 per cent. The body was then repressed at 75 tons per square inch, the final density being 7.65. It is stated that there is no need to use as much carbon as that required for chemical combination with all the absorbed oxygen in the powder.
