Abstract

1475852 Making metal powders USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 11 Feb 1975 [11 Feb 1974] 5796/75 Addition to 1475421 Heading B3A Steel powder with an apparent density of less than 2À8 gm/cc and composed of particles substantially all finer than 80 mesh is made from water atomized steel particles at least 80% of which are finer than 80 mesh and having a particle size characteristic (PSC) of between 1À0 and 2À7, by annealing the particles at a temperature in the range 1400‹ to 2100‹F to soften them, to reduce the oxygen content to below 0À2 per cent by wt., and to sinter the particles together, and feeding the sintered particles to a disc mill operated at such speed and will gap as to produce the required powder. A particular way of calculating the PSC of a powder is specified, and an equation giving the apparent density in terms of PSC, mill speed, and mill gap is given. Preferably, at least 95% of the particles as atomized are finer than 80 mesh. The annealing is carried out in a decarburizing reducing atmosphere e.g. hydrogen or dissociated ammonia to reduce the carbon content to below 0À1%, preferably below 0À01%, from a value of up to 0À8%, preferably below 0À15%, and the final powder preferably has an apparent density less than 2À6 gm/cc. The apparent density may be slightly decreased by using temperatures at the higher end of the range, e.g. 1800-2100‹ F.
