Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the captioned raw material powder suited for high density molding by simultaneously performing reduction and carburizing at 850W950°C in the specific atmosphere gas after spray drying and controlling the amount of oxygen and the amount of carbon to the specified amounts at the production of water atomized steel powder.
CONSTITUTION: Unreduced atomized steel powder is treated at temperatures of 850W950°C in a carburizing atmosphere such as of CO, CH4, etc. of 1.2W0.6wt% in carbon potential, whereby it is subjected to carburizing simultaneously with reducing. The resultant powder has the amount of oxygen 0.3W0.1wt% and the amount of carbon 1W0.6wt%, and this yields the raw material powder for powder metallurgy suited for production of high-density moldings. Unlike in conventional processes, costly hydrogen and ammonia gas as reducing atmosphere gas are not used and inexpensive modified gas is used and therefore cost may be reduced.
