Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture alloy steel powder suitable for raw material for powder metallurgy by a method wherein atomized steel powder containing elements, which are easy to be oxidized, is heated in a reducing gas atmosphere containing hydrogen gas, reduction-treated and annealing-treated.
CONSTITUTION: Atomized steel powder containing elements such as, Cr, Mn, V, Nb, Si, etc., which are easy to be oxidized, is reduction-treated in a low temperature range of 300W650°C, preferably, approximate 450W550°C, in a reducing gas (particularly, mixed gas of three molecules of hydrogen and one molecule of nitrogen) atmosphere containing hydrogen gas. The atomized steel powder after the reduction treatment is annealing-treated at a temperature of approximate 850W 1,200°C in an atmosphere containing the same hydrogen gas as mentioned above. Thus, steel powder with a low oxygen level is obtained as compared to conventional reduction methods.
