Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent deterioration of organic solvent at the time of producing a magnetic recording medium and to produce magnetized iron powder without any change of surface characteristic by treating the metal powder with gas containing steam after surface-oxidizing the metal powder containing iron as main component. CONSTITUTION:The surface oxidizing treatment is executed to the metal powder containing Fe as the main component produced by dry type reduction method under inert gas atmosphere containing oxygen gas. Next, the magnetized iron powder is produced by bringing into contact with gas of nitrogen gas, etc., containing the steam. It is desirable that steam partial pressure of the gas containing the steam is at about 0.01-10% and the treating temp. is at <=about 100 deg.C. Further, moisture content in the magnetized iron powder after treatment is desirable to be at <about 1%. The obtd. magnetized iron powder has non-active surface and excellent stability even in the organic solvent. This magnetized iron powder is suitable to produce magnetized coating for the magnetic recording medium.
