Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture a metal magnetic powder having excellent magnetic characteristics on a stable basis by a procedure in which the surface of an alloy magnetic powder composed primarily of metallic iron or iron, as a magnetic recording medium, is coated with Fe3O4 and then the surface of the Fe3O4 is further coated with Fe2O3.
CONSTITUTION: The fine particles of a Fe-alloy oxide containing an iron oxide, e.g., needlelike alpha-FeOOH, etc., or a metal element, e.g., Co, etc., are reduced at 150W700°C in an atmosphere of hydrogen gas, together with water vapor [in an amount such as to produce a water vapor partial pressure (PH2O/PH2) of 10W100%], in a retort in order to form Fe3O4 film on the surface of the Fe-alloy particles. Then, the particles are treated at a temperature of 100°C or less in an oxygen- containing gas, e.g., air, etc., to oxidize the surface portion of the Fe3O4 film to stable Fe2O3. Thus, fine metal particles for magnetic recording medium, having a high saturated magnetization rate because of the Fe3O4 and without the danger of explosively developed oxidation by air, can be stably manufactured.
