Abstract
PURPOSE:To enhance C/N and to improve oxidation stability by consisting ferromagnetic metal powder essentially consisting of iron specified in crystallite size and specifying the atomic number ratio of oxygen to iron at the time of providing a magnetic layer formed by dispersing the metal powder into a binder on a nonmagnetic base. CONSTITUTION:The metal powder essentially consisting of the iron specified in the crystallite size of the metal powder to 250Angstrom is used and the atomic number ratio of the oxygen to the iron surface is specified to 1.6-3.0 at the time of providing the magnetic layer formed by dispersing the ferromagnetic metal powder in the binder on the nonmagnetic base. For example, acicular alpha-FeOOH (0.4mum length and 20 acicular ratio) which contains 5atom.% Ni and is deposited with 4atom.% Si is heated and dehydrated at 500 deg.C in an N2 atmosphere to form the acicular alpha-Fe2O3 powder and thereafter, the powder is reduced for 6hr at 470 deg.C in gaseous H2 flow, by which the magnetic metal powder is obtd. The powder is thereafter immersed in a toluene in a manner as not to be brought into contact with the air and the toluene is evaporated at 40 deg.C in the air. After the powder is cooled, the concn. of O2 is increased to 30% and the powder is held therein for 3hr.
