Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare acicular magnetic metallic particles having remarkably improved rustproofness, by reduction-treating acicular metallic particles of iron oxide base and then by oxidation-treating the particles in an atmosphere containing a prescribed O2 content at a temperature of a specified range to form an oxidized film on the surface of metallic particles safely and in a short time.
CONSTITUTION: Acicular metallic particles having an iron oxide base and with Cr, Al Ti, etc. added are reduction-treated preferably in a hydrogen atmosphere. Subsequently, the metallic particles after reduction treatment are oxidation- treated in an atmosphere of a mixed gas of e.g. N2 gas and air that has an O2 concentration of 0.005W3% at 50W140°C, and thus the desired acicular magnetic metallic particles suitable for a magnetic recording medium such as a magnetic tape are obtained.
