Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain magnetic powder of metallic iron or an alloy consisting essentially of iron of excellent oxidation stability by reducing iron oxide particles by heating then holding the same in a hydrogen atmosphere contg. steam, and immersing these in an org. solvent after cooling.
CONSTITUTION: Iron oxide particles contg. iron oxide or cobalt are reduced by heating in a reducing gas to make metallic iron particles or iron alloy particles consisting essentially of iron. Thence, these are held for a prescribed time at 150W700°C in a hydrogen atmosphere contg. steam of 10W100% steam partial pressure. Thence, these are cooled down to room temp. under supply of gaseous nitrogen or the like, whereby dense oxide layers are formed on the surfaces of the metallic particles. these are then immersed in an org. solvent such as toluene, after which the particles are pulled up and the org. solvent is evaporated. By this method, the magnetic powder of metallic iron or an alloy consisting essentially of iron of excellent oxidation stability, magnetic characteristics, etc. is obtained.
