Abstract

PURPOSE: To form an oxide film of superior corrosion resistance by oxidation- treatment of the magnetic metal powder comprising essentially iron or its granules at predetermined temperatures in an inert gas atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Magnetic metal powder comprising essentially iron or its granules are subjected to oxidation treatment at ≤200°C reaction temperature in an inert gas atmosphere which contains 100W10,000ppm oxygen gas and is of ≤5,000ppm steam concentration or an evacuated oxygen atmosphere of 10-2W10-4atm, whereby an oxide film is formed on powder particle surfaces. The resulted magnetic powder has passive state composition such as Fe3O4 and exhibits superior corrosion resostance. The magnetic metal powder includes powder of fine needle-like metal iron of about ≤1μ grain sizes and about ≥2 ratio of long axis/short axis and the powder comprising essentially iron and contg. Co, Ni, Cr, etc. or may be granules thereof. In addition, nitrogen gas is suitable for the inert gas mixed with oxygen gas. A fluidized bed apparatus is preferable as the reacting apparatus.
