Abstract

In the production of bricks, fireclay or grog, use is made of clay or clay composition having such a uniform moisture content that little or no shinkage will occur upon the removal of further moisture therefrom. In the case of bricks, the composition is of such a plasticity that it is mouldable under a moderate pressure of 150 kgs. per sq. cm. and for this purpose may include fireclay, corundum, sillimanite, silicon carbide, quartz, feldspar &c. in addition to the clay. The composition may also include gas- or foam-forming or combustible substances. To produce clay of a uniform moisture content, the natural clay may be dried in stages being broken into smaller pieces or particles at each stage, or completely dried in powder form and then intimately mixed with a clay slip or water to form granules.
