Abstract

A refractory concrete composition consists by weight of 5-25% of finely ground silica (-28 Tyler mesh), 7-35% calcium aluminate cement, the remainder being refractory aggregate of calcined fireclay and/or calcined high alumina aggregates and/or calcined or uncalcined minerals of the kyanite group. The mix may be gauged with water and cast or rammed into place, e.g. in blast furnaces. Minor amounts of bentonite, ball clay and other plasticizers and set modifying agents may also be added.
