Abstract

A heat repellent paint comprises an alkaline silicate solution in admixture with ferric oxide and an inert filler, the proportion of ferric oxide being 20 to 70 per cent by volume of the combined ferric oxide and filler. The preferred proportions of ferric oxide is 25 to 50 per cent, these proportions being used in a sodium silicate solution consisting of 1 part of silicate to 3 parts of water. Talc is the preferred filler. In examples: (1) red ion oxide and talc are made into a paste with sodium silicate solution. There may also be present (2) calcium fluoride, (3) calcium fluoride and felspar and (4) zinc oxide and felspar. The compositions may be used to impregnate fire bricks, fire-grates, furnaces, kilns and heating plants generally, or be applied to any surface or material to prevent loss or penetration of heat.ALSO:A heat-repellant cement comprises an alkaline silicate solution in admixture with ferric oxide and an inert filler, the proportion of ferric oxide being 20 to 70 per cent, preferably 25 to 50 per cent, by volume of the combined ferric oxide and filler. A preferred solution comprises 1 part of sodium silicate to 3 parts of water, while tale is the preferred filler. In examples: (1) red iron oxide and talc are made into a paste with sodium silicate solution and there is also present (2) calcium fluoride; (3) calcium fluoride and felspar and (4) zinc-oxide and felspar. The compositions may be used to impregnate fire bricks, fire grates, furnaces, kilns and heating plants generally or may be applied to any surface or material to prevent loss or penetration of heat.
