Abstract

A coating composition is formed by mixing together a powdered mixture comprising asbestos, stone (e.g. quartz or marble or both), zinc oxide, barium sulphate, magnesium oxide and talc and an aqueous composition containing an alkali metal silicate and potassium carbonate. Coloured materials, preferably mineral colours, may be added to the powder which may be prepared by hand or mechanical mixing followed by drying in a rotary tube or kiln heated externally by a furnace. The liquid composition may be formed by mixing potassium silicate and sodium silicate while heating at 40-50 DEG C. and then adding a solution of potassium carbonate preferably with continuous agitation. The potassium carbonate solution may be prepared by boiling potassium carbonate in water and cooling to 50 DEG C. The composition is applied to interior and exterior surfaces of walls and buildings.
