Abstract

The bulk density of a powdered substance, such as a soapless detergent powder or a soap powder, which can be increased by the addition of moisture, is increased by mixing the powder with a finely-divided salt containing water of crystallization and subsequently causing the salt to give up some or all of its water of crystallization. The required amount of water of crystallization may be evolved by heating the mixture to a suitable point; about 40 DEG C. is exemplified. This may be effected continuously, such as by passing the mixture down a heated rotating tube. Efflorescent salts are preferred; sodium sulphate, sodium carbonate and sodium phosphate are specified. Copper sulphate and magnesium sulphate are less desirable as high temperatures are necessary to release the water of crystallization. Likewise, magnesium chloride and calcium chloride are undesirable since they are deliquescent. The invention is particularly applied to soapless detergents produced in the powder form such as the sodium salts of sulphated fatty alcohols. The substance known under the Registered Trade Mark " Teepol XL " is specified.
