Abstract
351,466. Radiants for gas fires. LUCKHURST, T. W., 32, The Boulevard, Weston-super-Mare. March 24, 1930, No. 9397. [Class 126.] Fireclay radiants for gas fires, of the type containing or treated with compounds of the rare earth metals, such as thorium, cerium, and the like, which modify the character of the radiation, have applied to their surfaces, or to portions thereof, a composition including the compounds in question associated with cementitious materials which promote adhesion of the compounds to the surface. Cements of the gypsum type, such as plaster of Paris or compositions used for moulds in the production of dentures, may be employed. Alternatively, magnesium or zinc oxy-chloride cements may be used. Generally only those parts of the radiant which become highly heated are coated. An example of the process, applied to an ordinary hollow fireclay radiant, consists in soaking the radiant in water, draining it, and applying to the projections on the inner surface a paste composed of one part of the cementitious material known by the registered Trade Mark " Plastron " and 2 parts of mantle ash, containing 98 per cent thorium oxide, to which is added a sufficient quantity of the impregnating fluid used by incandescent mantle manufacturers to form a liquid paste. The treated radiant is dried and then heated in a muffle to a temperature of not less than 900‹ C.
