Abstract
Facing tiles or bricks are produced by applying to the facing surface of a tile or brick of vitreous material a layer of a cold paste comprising an enamel and an aggregate, drying the resultant material and then firing it. Equal parts of a transparent enamel and gypsum are mixed with 5-10% of a white enamel. The mixture is formed into a paste with water and spread into a uniform layer 0.5-1 mm. thick on a glass sheet and engraved according to the outline of a previously fixed drawing. A coloured ceramic enamel is applied on top of the mixture layer. The coated glass tile is then dried for 5 to 8 hours and fired at about 800 DEG C. for 8 to 10 hours. The engraving may be effected by hand or by the use of dies. Lined or embossed glass may be used. Non-flat supports are placed on suitably shaped moulds during the firing.
