Abstract
Ceramic and baked clay products, e.g. brick, pottery, tiles and moulded blocks of concrete or cinder, are coated by applying to a surface thereof a composition comprising a thermosetting resin and pigment, the temperature of the surface being sufficiently high to produce at least partial curing of the resin, e.g. 125 DEG to 250 DEG F. The composition may be applied in dry or liquid form and in one or more coats, the second, heavier coating being applied preferably a few seconds or minutes after the first light coating. The coatings may have different compositions. The composition may be applied to hot, freshly fired bricks and if desired curing may be completed by a further baking treatment. Suitable synthetic resins are phenol-, urea- and melamine-aldehyde or alkyl resins. In the example a xylol-butanol solution of melamine-aldehyde and alkyl resins containing titanium dioxide is used.
