Abstract

Tiles made by pressing clay dust in dies or moulds are produced with a rough or pitted surface by placing between the tile and the die a loose cushion or liner having the required surface characteristics, so that, in glazing, the first coat of glaze will sink into the crevices of the surface. The loose liner may be an abrasive fabric such as emery cloth or a sheet of metal or moulded rubber, and the degree of roughness of its surface may vary to suit the glaze. After the tile is thus pressed it is fired, being preferably tilted at a suitable angle for firing, and the first coat of glaze is applied. Surplus glaze is removed, and further glazing and remaining treatment proceed in known manner, the different glazes being mixed if required to produce various colour effects.
