Abstract

Relates to apparatus for preparing appendages to be fixed on ceramic ware, e.g. handles for cups as in Specification 687,172 wherein the handle is formed by forcing clay into a mould of which one end presses against a surface like that of the cup and the handle is fixed to the cup before firing the clay, its release from the mould being eased by passing air under pressure through porous inserts which together form the mould cavity. The invention comprises a mould member having a porous clay-engaging portion made of grains joined together, the grain having a hardness of more than 7 in. Mohs' scale. The hardness is sufficient to obviate the pore being choked up by the material being burned over by abrasive particles in the clay. Suitable materials are carborundum or aluminium oxide.
