Abstract
1300327 Expanded clays HOUILLERES DU BASSIN DU NORD ET DU PAS-DECALAIS and CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE 27 April 1970 [28 April 1969] 20087/70 Heading C1J Expanded clays are made by mining clays with coal shale or fly ash which contain a quantity of unburnt carbon, and heating in an oxidizing atmosphere to initiate combustion of a proportion of the carbon so that the temperature reaches above 1000‹ C. by this combustion alone; and subsequently subjecting the mixture to a second heat treatment again in an oxidizing atmosphere at over 1300‹ C. wherein expansion of the clays occurs. The coal shale is floating shale added in amounts of 20 wt. per cent of crushed buddle shale with a grain size not exceeding 20 mm. which is converted into powder with a grain size under 800 microns, at least 50% of which has a grain size under 200 microns.
