Abstract
In the combustion of alkali metal-containing and possibly also vanadium-containing fuels for operation of gas turbines at temperatures of 760 DEG C and above, corrosion and deposits can be greatly reduced if the combustion is carried out in the presence of magnesium and silicon compounds which form SiO2 and MgO at the combustion temperature. The amounts of these compounds should be such that, based on the oxides formed on combustion, an SiO2:MgO weight ratio of greater than 2:1 is established and the silicon:alkali metal weight ratio in the resultant combustion products is greater than 6:1. If vanadium-containing fuels are used, at least 2 parts by weight of magnesium should be present per part by weight of vanadium.
