Abstract
A fuel for gas turbine engines comprises a mixture of a petroleum residue fraction and a minor proportion of a compound of zinc insoluble in the petroleum residue fraction. The zinc compound may be zinc oxide or zinc carbonate and may be employed in an amount sufficient to provide up to 3 per cent of zinc, based on the weight of the fuel. If desired, more than one zinc compound may be used. The presence of the zinc compound materially reduces or prevents the formation of deposits upon interior surfaces of the engine, such as upon the stator and rotor blades. Corrosion by vanadium pentoxide present in the deposits is also greatly reduced or entirely eliminated. The petroleum residue fraction may be furnace oil or Admiralty fuel oil. According to the Provisional Specification, an oil-insoluble compound of magnesium may be employed instead of the zinc compound, and magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate are mentioned.
