Abstract
A fuel for gas turbine engines comprises a mixture of a petroleum residue fraction and a minor proportion of magnesium oxide or carbonate. The magnesium compound may be employed in an amount sufficient to provide up to 3 per cent. of magnesium, based on the weight of the fuel. If desired, a mixture of magnesium oxide and carbonate may be used. The presence of the magnesium compound materially reduces or prevents the formation of deposits upon interior surfaces of the engine, such as upon the stator and rotor blades. Corrosion by vanadium pentoxide present in the deposits is also greatly reduced or entirely eliminated. The petroleum residue fraction may be furnace oil or Admirralty fuel oil. According to the Provisional Specification, any oil-insoluble compound of magnesium or zinc may be employed instead of magnesium oxide or carbonate, and zinc oxide and zinc carbonate are mentioned. Specification 689,579 is referred to.
