Abstract
A fuel composition to reduce corrosion in gas turbines attributable to vanadium comprises (i) a major proportion of a fuel oil containing a vanadium compound; (ii) a minor proportion of a Group II metal, for example magnesium, a Group II metal oxide, or a compound of a Group II metal which will give rise to the oxide under working conditions in a gas turbine, e.g. naphthenates, palmitates, stearates or salts obtained from the acids formed during the oxidation of petroleum waxes or from the acids contained in tall oil; and (iii) a minor proportion of an inert refractory substance with a particle size not greater than 30 microns. The refractory substance must be inert under the conditions existing in the combustion chamber of a gas turbine burning fuel oil and can be silica, magnesia, silica-magnesia, silica alumina, montmorillonite or bentonite clays preferably with a particle size between 5 to 15 microns and in the proportion of 1 to 12 times the weight of ash produced by the fuel oil on combustion. A preferred refractory substance is a cracking catalyst such as magnesium or aluminium silicate. The proportion of Group II metal present should be not less than that stoichiometrically necessary to form the metal orthovanadate and is preferably 2 to 8 atoms of the metal to one atom of vanadium.
