Abstract
Organic metal compounds such as the chelates of polyfunctional ketones, naphthenates or the salts or soaps of fatty acids are added to heavy, bunker C type oil fuel so that a basic metallic oxide, less basic than the alkalis, and an amphoteric metal oxide are entrained in the flue gases to form a refractory coating around the ash particles or molten slag droplets and inhibit the deposition of slag in a boiler. Amounts of the organic metal compounds corresponding to 1 to 100 parts per million of the oxide mixture are used, the oxides of each type being in equimolecular ratio so that a spinel of high melting point is formed. The basic metal oxide may be an oxide of magnesium ferrous iron, or strontium, and the amphoteric oxide may be an oxide of aluminium, ferric iron cerium or zirconium. The zirconium and strontium salts of alpha hydroxy duo-decenoic acid are given as examples of a suitable mixture of additives, as are the magnesium and aluminium salts of the same acid.
