Abstract

To a vanadium-containing fuel oil, which on combustion yields ash containing vanadium pentoxide which is liable to cause corrosion of metallic parts exposed to the combustion products of the oil at elevated temperatures, there is added, for the purpose of reducing this corrosion, a substance with which the vanadium pentoxide will react in preference to said metallic parts. The substance may be a metal of Group II of the Periodic Table, an oxide thereof or a compound yielding an oxide thereof at combustion temperatures. Specific substances mentioned are calcium, magnesium, zinc, their oxides and zinc naphthenate. Other organic compounds such as the oleate, stearate or linoleate of the selected metal may be employed, but it is preferred to add the oxide, hydroxide or carbonate of the selected metal dissolved or suspended in oil, water or other liquid medium. The fuel oil may be a residual oil and the addition of zinc naphthenate to a Curacao fuel oil (which contains sodium and nickel in addition to vanadium) is mentioned. The residual oils may also contain sulphur, but calcium and its compounds should only be added to a sulphur-free oil or in cases where some means of removing the sulphur is used. It is believed that the metal oxide additive, or the metal oxide formed by oxidation of the metal additive or by decomposition of the added metal compound, reacts with the vanadium pentoxide content of the ash, resulting from the combustion of the fuel oil, to form a stable vanadate. According to the Provisional Specification, the added substance may be nickel oxide; the hydroxide, carbonate, oleate, stearate, linoleate or naphthenate of calcium; iron, cobalt or chromium or their oxides or oxide-yielding compounds; and substances which would give rise, during the combustion of the vanadium-containing fuel oil, to vanadium silicate. Specifications 639,468, [Group XII], and 702,215, [Group XI], are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 667,371, 689,579 and 697,101.
